You can now move from an overactive, stress-prone “beta” brain state (where we often get stuck) into the peaceful and soothing “alpha” state in a matter of minutes—something previously only achievable by highly-experienced meditators. Dear Reader, If you’re overweight and suffer from stress, anxiety, or emotional challenges, then you’ve likely developed an imbalance of the hormone, cortisol, that can lead to weight gain and even obesity. You already know that stress is bad for your health, but did you know that stress can actually make you fat? Here’s what happens… When you have persistent mental or emotional stresses in your life, your cortisol levels can remain elevated throughout the day. Genetically, cortisol’s role is to give you speed, strength, and energy to deal with immediate physical threats like a bear chasing you through the forest. If you need to run from a predator, cortisol is essential, but if you need to deal with a stressful job, a troubled marriage, or any kind of serious emotional challenge that occurs in your everyday life, cortisol is a huge problem.
Here’s How Your Body “Gets Fat On Stress”When you’re consistently stressed out or struggling emotionally, cortisol can remain elevated continuously, and you’ll see and feel the effects on your waistline. Here are the most noticeable side effects of chronically elevated cortisol:
- Water Retention – have you ever worked late into the night, slept poorly and awoken the next morning with a puffy, bloated face? That’s cortisol for you. It acts as an anti-diuretic causing water retention that can lead to extremely rapid weight gain.
- Loss of Muscle Mass–cortisol stimulates gluconeogenesis, the production of sugar from amino acids in the liver. So during times of stress, your body literally eats its own lean muscle mass for quick energy. The combination of less muscle and more sugar in your bloodstream leads to rapid weight gain.
- Insulin Resistance – insulin is the fat storage hormone. It keeps your blood sugar within a safe range. Unfortunately, cortisol counteracts insulin and leads to insulin resistance, a common condition among overweight people where your body needs more and more insulin to produce the same blood sugar balance. And since insulin is the fat storage hormone, the more insulin you have in circulation, the more your body becomes a fat storage machine.
How Meditation & Visualization Can Help…There are countless ways to relieve stress. You can watch a funny movie, go out for a long walk, dance, exercise—or do all of the above. The challenge is that most of us are unable to do our favorite stress-relieving activities at the times when we most need them. For example, if golf is how you let off steam, but you can only golf on Sundays—what do you do on a Tuesday night after a very challenging day at the office? And what if your favorite stress-busting activity is an evening out with your closest friends, but you’re only able to get together 2 or 3 time a year? What then happens when the stress of parenting or financial pressures build up and your friends are not around? There is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to stress relief, but there are certain self-administered techniques that are so effective, so safe and universal, that it’s in your best interest to learn them. From my research, my own personal journey, and my one-on-one coaching experience over the past decade, I’ve learned that the daily practice of meditation and visualization is essential for anyone serious about their health.
“Meditation Can Change Your Metabolism, Heart Rate, Respiration, Blood Pressure & Brain Chemistry…”
Harvard physician, Herbert Benson, was one of the first to research and document what he called, “The Relaxation Response,” a very measurable and significant change in physical, mental, and emotional responses related to stress through the use of meditation.
But You Don’t Have to Be a Monk to Meditate…I first started practicing guided meditation when I was 10 years old. As a kid, I used to get terrible migraines. I would sit in a dark room for hours trying to sleep while I waited for the pounding and the nausea to pass. My father was a dentist and used visualization with his patients for pain control during procedures. On a whim one day, as I felt a migraine coming on, he sat me down and took me on a mental journey to see if it would help. He started by walking me through a relaxation exercise. He asked me to release the tension in my feet, my calves, and my thighs until I had relaxed all the way up to my face and scalp. Then he said, “I want you to imagine that we’re skiing at Waterville Valley,” a ski area we used to visit every winter. “Picture yourself at the top of Valley Run, our favorite trail,” he said. “Imagine there’s a big bucket of black sand on your shoulder, and as you’re skiing down, that sand black sand is tipping out behind you, sprinkling all over the white snow. And now imagine that sand falling away behind you is your headache,” he told me. And as simple as it sounds, this visualization practice became life changing. My dad continued to guide me, and halfway down the ski run, the bucket was half empty, and he said, “Now your headache is halfway gone.” And sure enough, my headache had faded. By the time we reached the very bottom, the bucket was empty and my headache had disappeared altogether. I soon learned to use that ski run visualization to relieve migraines all on my own. Initially, it took me 15 minutes to clear a headache with my dad’s approach, but later, I learned to banish the pain in just a few minutes. And it didn’t stop there… At age 16, I was addicted to cigarettes and wanted desperately to stop. I ‘d become an expert at achieving a relaxation state from all my practice with headaches, so I again enlisted the power of my mind to change my body’s cravings. First, I imagined that the tar in cigarettes was the terrible-smelling black goop that construction workers smeared on the roads. I imagined that with each inhale, my lungs would fill with that same black, sticky tar. The association was so strong and so repugnant that I quit the very next day. It felt automatic. Despite these amazing early successes, I managed to completely forget about visualization and meditation until 20 years later when I was so overweight, I was ready to try anything—literally anything—to lose weight.
My Story: How Guided Mediation Worked for MeBy 2001, I weighed over 400lbs. I’d tried every diet you can think of: high carb, low carb, high protein, zero fat—and the process was always the same. Initially, I’d starve myself for a few weeks or even a few months following the diet the “t”. And as you’d expect, I’d always lose some weight, but the moment I stopped the diet, the weight came right back on—and usually a little more. The real change for me happened when I stopped restrictive dieting altogether, stopped grueling exercise routines, and instead focused on getting my body to want to be thin from the inside out. Of everything I learned and used in my transformation, the most useful tool for me was my daily practice of meditation and visualization.
At 409lbs, willing to try anything, I began using guided meditation and visualizations every night before bed.Today, I’m fortunate to have over 350,000 readers in 48 countries, so I have a huge audience who I communicate with directly every week. This has allowed me to take my personal research way beyond my home, and in doing so, I’ve tapped into the collective experiences of people all over the world. And here’s what I’ve learned… Just like me, the majority of my readers report that the guided visualization and meditation practices, when done daily, are the most effective tools they’ve ever discovered for weight loss. How could this be? Meditation calms your nervous system. It turns off the “fight or flight” response and allows you to find emotional and hormonal balance again—both of which are essential for weight loss. Guided meditation allowed me to cure my migraines, quit smoking, and eventually transform my body and life naturally and enjoyably—forever. I lost over 200lbs and have kept it off for over a decade, and with everyone I work with, I absolutely insist that they commit to a daily mind-body practice. It is the cornerstone a total mind-body transformation, and it stops stress dead in its tracks.
Your Brain & Meditation: Finding BalanceYour brain has 4 distinct “wave states” that correspond to drastically different emotional and physical responses in your body. A healthy individual spends some portion of the day and night in all 4 brain wave states. As you’ve probably already guessed, our modern, over stimulating and stressful world can keep us from achieving balance.
BETA: when you’re overworked and overstressed, this is where you get “stuck.”ALPHA: this is where you need to spend more time to balance out and heal your body mental, physically, and hormonally. During waking hours, we are usually in beta brain wave state due to our hectic lives, but we’d like to spend more time in the alpha state as it provides balance, calm, and peace to our hyper-active beta moments.
The 4 Brain Wave States
- BETA – when you’re wide-awake and alert, making decisions, thinking critically, and multi-tasking, you’re almost always in a beta brain wave state. When you’re stressed out, anxious, and overworked, you tend to linger here longer than you should, even when what you really need is to relax.
- ALPHA – this is the brain wave state associated with relaxation, creativity, love, and awareness. After prayer, meditation, or a loving encounter you’ll usually find yourself in an alpha state. This alpha state balances out your beta moments, and in an ideal world, you’d fluctuate back and forth between alpha and beta throughout the day.
- THETA – here, your brain is in a very deep state of meditation where intuition is peaked, memory is sharp, and you’re so relaxed you’re nearly asleep—but not quite. Many of the greatest thinkers in history reported “big breakthroughs” in the moments just before sleep, and it’s highly likely they were in a theta brain wave state during those times.
- DELTA – this is the deepest of brain wave states associated with healing and rejuvenating deep sleep. Human growth hormone is triggered in the delta state, and it’s believed to be a time when the unconscious and conscious mind work to resolve conflicts in your life.
So how exactly do we do this?Just 30 years ago, the best option for changing your brain wave state was to get a meditation teacher and spend months or even years learning to control your mind. If you’ve ever tried meditation on your own, you know how difficult it can be… … your legs hurt. … your back hurts. … and your mind won’t stop racing. Some people try so hard to meditate that the act of “trying” actually increases their level of stress in the short term. Meditation is a skill—an incredibly valuable skill when learned—but very difficult to master, and it can be quite intimidating for a beginner.
Achieve “Alpha” in Minutes…If you’re a Gabriel Method reader, you’ve no doubt used my guided visualization practices. They’re used by tens of thousands of people on a daily basis and are tremendously effective. Today, I have someone I’d like you to meet whose work you’ll find equally transformative. Please meet, Gabriel Method Coach and certified hypnotherapist, Paula Robbins.
Paula is my most-trusted, mind-body healer and her guided Cellular Wisdom program can help you achieve the benefits of deep meditations in minutes… with no previous training required.
“You have emotional trauma trapped on the cellular level, and this stored trauma can lead to weight gain. Think of it like a deep wound on the cellular level. Your body uses fat to shield you from that pain, so we’re going to speak directly to your cells to clear those blockage so you can let them go once and for all.”This sounded a little out there, but the results were more remarkable than I can express in words. I’d never done cellular release work before, so it was a completely new experience. Unlike talk therapy where you relive all your painful moments from the past, this was more a letting go. As I sat there, listening, I felt the emotional trauma and stresses of my past being released one-by-one, naturally. It was an intense experience, but it was also enjoyable and relaxing at the same time. Ultimately, this type of cellular healing work has had such a big impact on my life that Paula and I followed up with numerous sessions together; and each time, I clear more and more blockages and felt lighter and more at peace from the inside out. Since that time, I’ve referred hundreds of my readers to Paula, and eventually she joined The Gabriel Method team as a senior coach and advisor. The problem is that Paula herself is extremely busy with one-on-one consultations. She’s often booked many months in advance, so to make this powerful work available to more people at a very low cost, I asked her to create an at-home, audio version of cellular level healing work that my readers can use anytime. The result is called, Cellular Wisdom, and it’s a 4-part, at-home program where Paula leads you into deep communication with the cells of your body, enhanced with powerful SMART Music composed by Andrew Harris, specifically created to quickly take you from that overactive beta brain wave state, down to an alpha state where you’re more receptive and open to positive imagery and affirmations at the deepest level possible.
